THE ANCIENT THEATRE OF EPIDAVROS

Built on the side of Kinortiou, overlooking the Sanctuary of Asklepios is the most famous theatre of ancient Greece, the theatre of Asklipieio of Epidaurus. It was built around the mid-4th century by the architect Polykleitos and is the best preserved monument of the site. It has a capacity of 12.000-14.000 and has been preserved almost intact. The theatre is renowned for its harmonious proportions, but mainly for the unique acoustic effect that comes from a perfect knowledge of physics and mathematics. Musical and theatrical performances we given here during celebrations in honour of Asclepius. Since 1954 the theatre of Epidavros has hosted a festival of ancient tragedy and comedy during the summer months

The Ancient Theatre of Epidavros is found in the Argolida, at the archaeological site of Asklipieio, half an hour by car form Nafplion and around 2 hours from Athens. If you would like to see a map of the area click here.

by Car

Coming by car from Athens follow the signs and leave the National Road Athens-Corinth immediately after the bridge of at the Corinth Canal. Leaving from the right lane go under the Highway and turn left towards the main road Epidaurus Corinth-Epidaurus. Follow the signs «to the Ancient Theatre of Epidavros» after approx. one hour and after the towns of Old Epidavros and New Epidavros, you will arrive at the crossroads at Ligourio, where you will turn left to Asklipieio. If you travel from Nafplion you will travel through the town of Ligourio and in the direction of the Ancient Theatre of Epidavros.
